Calculating Caterpillars1

This is a simple and entertaining game which encourages mathematics. It can be played by several children or an individual child and play may be independent or teacher lead.

During teacher lead activities invloving large groups, the children may be divided into teams where one team creates the sum and the other team answers it. In smaller groups, the first child stands on any number on the first caterpillar, the second child stands on any mathematical sign between the two caterpillars, a third child stands on any number on the second caterpillar and the fourth child in the box shouts out the answer to the sum.

This is a wonderful way of encouraging a diverse group of children to get involved in mathematics as the game is bright, fun and can be played by individuals, as a group or in teams.
